TSS #002: A Simple Start to Create a Safe Space on Your Clinical Team

Jun 11, 2023

Read time 2.5 minutes

Today, I will tell you how to make your healthcare team work better by creating a safe space.

Why does this matter? I can give you 5 reasons:

  1. Team stress, distress, and unaddressed trauma

  2. People feel burned out and too tired to do their jobs.

  3. Team members don't want to work together.

  4. Disrespect and fighting.

  5. People being absent a lot or not being able to hire new staff.

But what if we could make a space where everyone feels safe and open to new ideas? That's where real solutions can come from!

Unfortunately, Sometimes, healthcare leaders get stuck. They keep trying the same things over and over, but nothing changes. It's like they're stuck in a loop.

Sometimes, Healthcare Leaders Get Stuck.

Here are some habits you might have used to be a great healthcare worker, but they're not helping you lead a team:

  1. Being smart. Sometimes, being smart can be a problem.

  2. Working too hard. This will just make you and your team too tired.

  3. Always thinking critically. This can lead to judging people too harshly.

  4. Giving up everything for work. This isn't healthy for you.

Now, how can we create this safe space for your team? It's not as hard as you think.

Step 1: Admit you don't have all the answers.

This might be tough, but it's important. When you admit you don't know everything, you can start to see things in a new way. It's like when your kids grow up, and you realize you can't control everything they do. You need to change your approach.

Step 2: Understand that what worked before might not work now.

The things that made you good at your job before might not make you a good leader. Hard work, being good at tasks, and sticking to a schedule may not work when dealing with people and their problems.

Step 3: Let things happen.

It might seem scary to just let things happen. But if you can stop fighting for a bit, you'll start to see things differently.

So, to wrap up:

  1. Admit that you don't have all the answers.

  2. Understand that what worked before might not work now.

  3. Let things happen.

Now, for the ACTION STEPS:

  1. Ask yourself: What do I need and want to feel safe?

  2. Ask yourself: What do I need and want to be open and learn?

  3. Ask yourself: What do I need to give and receive respect?

Well, that's it for today. I hope you enjoyed it.
